On Repeat: November 2023

On Repeat is a monthly roundup of My Music Mixtape’s favourite tracks that are featured on the ‘Radio Friendly Indie Rock and Alt Pop‘ playlist.

November was full of bangers, including a dark but powerful track by UK-based singer-songwriter Lizzie Esau and a heart-breaking tale about bad timing by Zack Robertson. Continue reading below to learn more about all the artists who landed on this month’s edition of On Repeat.

Roadkill – Lizzie Esau

“The song is probably the darkest thing I have ever written about. I didn’t even expect it to be released but we all loved it and it sort of just took on a life of its’ own and ended up on the EP. It’s about being manipulated, about being used, but also there is a sense of overcoming a situation and moving on. The lyrics are self deprecating but also empowering.”

Lizzie Esau

“Roadkill” is a beautifully crafted track that showcases the versatility of Lizzie Esau’s voice, which takes listeners from the delicate phrasings that characterize the verses to the powerful, anthemic chorus that will have you singing along with her at the top of your lungs. We promise you’ll be listening to this high-energy gem over and over again. My Music Mixtape

Right One, Wrong Time – Zack Robertson

“Right One, Wrong Time is about an experience that we all experience at least once in our lives, meeting someone perfect, falling in love, but for one reason or another you both know it wouldn’t work out. And the different ways people react and deal with these heartbreaking situations. Relatable and emotional, this is one to scream sing until you feel better.”

Zack Robertson

“Right One, Wrong Time” immediately commands your attention with a memorable guitar riff that grips you for the entirety of the track. It transports the listener into a reflective state of mind, one that contemplates the emotionally-charged subject that makes up Zack Robertson’s heartfelt lyrics. The song especially comes to life during the call and response vocal harmonies that shape the chorus, heightening the persistent sense of vulnerability that occupies the verses. A relatable track by a songwriter who clearly knows how to connect with people. My Music Mixtape

Washed By The Waves – Peartree

It’s a musical experience that delves into the depths of human emotions. It explores the behaviour in the face of failure, evoking the irresistible desire to escape to a more peaceful place, leaving everything behind. These complex emotions find expression through a striking metaphor of summer vacations, where one can finally feel free.

Peartree

“Washed By The Waves” is the musical equivalent of lying down on a hammock, one where you can sit back, relax and forget about your problems. With its dreamy, shimmering guitar tones and Rémi Perals’ equally captivating vocals, it’s hard not to feel like you’re floating in the clouds. This track grows on you with each listen, largely driven by its cinematic vibe and outstanding production quality. My Music Mixtape

SOLO – Charles Edward

“This heartfelt composition is a humble exploration of love, the allure of wanderlust, and the pursuit of personal purpose, all set against the backdrop of youthful discovery…embodies a down-to-earth and melancholic narrative that explores the complexity of love when it’s entangled with the notion of someone seeking solace through solo travel.”

Charles Edward

It’s the raw fragility of Charles Edward’s vocals that draw in listeners in “SOLO”. The acoustic guitar that permeates the instrumental allows his lyrics to breathe in space – and that’s a great thing because these words are striking. He sings for all of us who have felt the jealous longing for someone you care about (and maybe love) who is unfortunately on a different path than you. ‘We’re all just pit stops that happen along the way’ – a poignant, heartfelt reflection we can all appreciate. My Music Mixtape

ember ember – Mystee

Mystee wrote “ember ember” during lockdown in the UK. It’s about trying to
remain hopeful when it feels like everything you love is burning down
around you.

Mystree press release

“ember ember” represents the perfect combination of classic indie rock and a contemporary singer-songwriter style. Excellent guitar tones sit at the foundation of this catchy number, ranging from clean, melodic phrases to gritty injections that push the chorus to soaring heights. Singer Ilana Held brings a folk sensibility to the track with her smooth vocals, image-laden lyrics and strong use of metaphor. My Music Mixtape
