On Repeat is a monthly roundup of My Music Mixtape’s favourite tracks that are featured on the ‘Radio Friendly Indie Rock and Alt Pop‘ playlist.
This month is highlighted by the darker side of human emotion, including an emotional track about jealousy by The Trusted, an unapologetic anthem by Gin Wife that takes aim at elitism and a catchy indie-pop song by Carson Aday that addresses the challenges of staying grounded in the music industry. Continue reading below to learn more about all the artists who landed on December’s edition of On Repeat.
Burning the Night – The Trusted
“Burning the Night” delves into the depths of late-night irrational jealousy, exploring those moments when darkness engulfs your thoughts and destructive emotions take hold. Lead singer Tom describes it as a song about coping with ‘late-night restlessness and irrationality,’ revealing the emotions that lurk in the shadows.”
The Trusted
“Burning the Night” is an intensely emotional song; and how could it not be given its focus on the destructive powers of jealousy? The Trusted are at their best on this track, pushing the boundaries of their indie-rock-meets-new-wave soundscape by injecting layer upon layer of spine-tingling instrumentation. They represent a cross between The National and The 1975, but with an even stronger desire to experiment and take risks. The result is a beautifully arranged, irresistible song that is bound to end up on your list of favourites. My Music Mixtape
Rat Race – Gin Wife
“This track is a dig at sycophantic behavior, taking a specific jab at the habit of kissing up to those who are rich and relevant while putting down the people who refuse to participate in social games in an attempt to make oneself feel like they too are societally valuable and/or superior.”
Gin Wife
“Rat Race” is a hard-hitting anthem that successfully melds together the best of alt rock and new wave, shaping a musical adventure that features a prominent bass line, fuzzy guitar tones and thunderous percussion. This high-energy dynamic is balanced with singer Sierra Torres’ outstanding smooth-like-butter vocals. Her unapologetic lyrics take centre stage in this track – the anger and tension is palpable, but so is her resilience. “Rat Race” is bold and assertive, acting as a reminder that we all need to check our egos at the door. Fade Away – Carson Aday
“Fade Away was written about Carson’s fear of losing his Christian faith as his career grows and develops. In an industry filled with addiction and ego-centrism, Carson holds tight to his family and friends who whisper “don’t fade away” amidst the pulling tides.”
Carson Aday (from press release)
It’s nearly impossible to listen to “Fade Away” and not find yourself repeatedly singing the chorus’ main refrain ‘don’t fade away’. This catchy indie-pop track addresses the challenge of holding on to your roots while facing the competing interests of the music industry – and Carson Aday’s soothing vocal performance is both reflective and powerful, highlighting the push and pull nature of this dilemma. The melodic piano hook is beautiful and necessary to help keep the energetic dynamic “down to earth”, reinforcing the central theme of this song. “Fade Away” is full of nuance and subtlety, ensuring you’ll keep listening while contemplating your own values. Surrender – Ehle
“The song is a call to embrace the inner witch, a celebration of dark femininity, and an ode to the allure of being in control. It’s the anthem for the witchy alter ego that secretly longs to reside in a mystical forest, casting spells and enchanting the world as a mesmerizing femme fatale.”
EHLE
Lyrically and musically, “Surrender” is all about seduction. Right from the first note, this track grabs hold of the listener and doesn’t let go – and that’s exactly the point given the controlling femme fatale figure at the centre of the narrative. EHLE brings this story to life with her sultry, flirtatious vocals and lyrics rich in vivid imagery, while the guitar-forward instrumentation paints the dark backdrop required for such a song. We guarantee that upon first listen, EHLE will have you coming back for more. My Music Mixtape
Aphelia – Emma Tea
“This song is about wanting to be with someone, but you can’t, for whatever the reason (such as moving away). It was inspired by some friends of mine, however I have related it to my own experiences also.”
Emma Tea
It is advised to avoid putting “Aphelia” in a box. On the surface, it’s classic alt pop; but when you dig deep there are elements of indie-pop, electro-pop and even – believe it or not – Celtic folk, as is characterized by Emma Tea’s ethereal vocal style. Bottom line: there’s a lot to unpack in this catchy, wonderfully arranged song. Case in point, the grungy guitar in the pre-chorus somehow masterfully works with the dance floor vibe that follows. Simply put, “Aphelia” is unique, it’s refreshing and it’s so, so good. My Music Mixtape
