There’s something quietly reassuring about discovering a band that understands exactly what makes the guitar feel timeless. We first came across The Casbahs through their single “Electric Daydreams,” a track that immediately stood out for its warmth and grit. With Peasants Of The Show, the UK five-piece builds on that first impression and stretches it across a full-length experience that feels both nostalgic and freshly alive.

As a follow-up to their 2022 debut Been Here Before, this album leans confidently into a sound rooted in classic guitar-driven rock, while never feeling stuck in the past. It opens with “Crossfire,” which sets the tone perfectly. There’s an immediate sense of movement in the staccato rhythm, paired with a vocal that feels commanding without losing its raw edge. The chorus lifts everything just enough to invite a singalong, and subtle details like the guitar lick around the one-minute mark and the solo later on give the track a satisfying sense of progression.

“Electric Daydreams” remains a standout, capturing that familiar, lived-in feeling of classic rock while sharpening it with a modern polish. It recalls the spirit of Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” yet The Casbahs inject their own urgency into it, making it feel like more than just a nod to the past.

The album’s strength lies in its ability to shift gears without losing cohesion. “I Wanna Be Rich” taps into a 90s radio rock energy, with a chorus that practically demands to be shouted back. It’s easy to hear shades of Oasis in its uplifting, feel-good core. In contrast, “Different Way Home” strips things back with acoustic textures and a touch of mandolin, creating a more reflective moment while still holding onto the band’s signature grit in the chorus.

“Northern Skies” introduces a subtle Americana influence through its slide guitar, while “Free Will” dives into darker territory. A rumbling bass line anchors the track before it bursts into a frenetic, fuzz-driven chorus that adds an edge to the album’s overall palette. That balance between light and shade continues with “Ghosts In The Dust,” which blends the rhythmic punch of “Crossfire” with the melodic pull of the more introspective tracks.

There’s also a playful side to the band that surfaces on “Speak Before I Think,” where whistling melodies and clean guitar tones create an easygoing atmosphere before the track gradually builds in intensity. Then there’s “Leaves,” one of the album’s emotional high points. Its steady acoustic foundation builds patiently, layering anticipation until it releases into a dopamine-fuelled cathartic surge of guitars. The refrain, centered on the passage of time and desire for authenticity, lands with quiet weight.

Closing track “The Game” feels like a fitting exhale. Its folk-inspired arrangement and harmonica accents reveal another dimension of the band, ending the album on a note that feels reflective and human. What stands out most across Peasants Of The Show is how each track holds its own while contributing to a broader arc. There’s a consistent interplay between fragility and bite, melody and grit. It’s a reminder that guitar-forward rock is far from fading. In the hands of The Casbahs, it feels alive, evolving, and worthy of close attention. My Music Mixtape
